Manchester Road Board.
* The ordinary monthly meeting of the above body was held in tbeir office*, Feilding, on Saturday last. PresentMessrs F. Y. Lethbridge (chairman), H. J. Booth, A. Conway, W. G. Pearce, J. ', Purkiss, G. Wheeler. J The minutes of the previous meeting - were read aud confirmed. j Correspondence was received and dealt with as follows : — From H. W. Simes, stating he had ', received permanent injury to his knee ' owing to his horse putting its foot ' through a rotten plank on a bridge on the Palmerston-Ashurst road, thereby r falling and causing tbe injury. He i asked that he be awarded compensation, . to be decided by arbitration. — The . Clerk was instructed to obtain further . information. From Secretary Cheltenham Dairy Company, requesting the Board to make a ford across the Kiwitea stream on > Forlong's road as settlers on Makino road desired to send their milk to tho factory at Cheltenham. From J. Jeffries, requesting tbat four or tive chains of Jeffries' road be formed. FromG. S. Cawood, stating be had dispose* of his section on Makino road to Mr W. Hunter, and requesting his name be removed from the rate roil for same. From G. H. Allerby, applying for . position of roadman. From Gardner Bros., Ashurst, requesting the Board to allow them and A. and Y. Davey the use of ferry at the rate of £2 10s per year. From S. Knight aud A. Rendall, re change of name on rate roll from former to latter for section 14, subdivision G. — Agreed to. From A, Hoffman, complaining tbat the ferryman at the Gorge did not attend to his duties in the matter of taking passengers across the river promptly. From Mayor Feilding Borough Council, asking if this Board would agree in delaying erection of bridge across tbe Kiwitea stream without prejudicm? the Commissioner's award. From Clerk Rangitikei County Council, enclosing estimate of the cost of erecting two additional spans to the Onepuhi bridge, with repairs to present structure and protection of river banks. Also, that his Council were making application to tbe Government for a loan f^r their share of the cost. Mr James, of Ashurst, 'waited on the Board and requested that an auctioneer's license should be issued to him at a reduced fee. Also, that he was willing ' to accept some small office under the Board. — It was decided to leave tbe matter over till next meeting to see what could be done. The Engineer reported having commenced work at the Kakariki ford, and that a 50-foot spau was required on the Mangaone bridge ou Reid's line. Tbat fascines would be required at tbe proposed ford on Forlong's road and otber protective works. Tbat he had inspected the drains complained of by Mr Riddiford, and found it was only in flood time there was anj* overflow. Proposed by Mr Conway, seconded by Mr Bootb, Tbat the Board call tenders to have the Watershed road rounded and the watcroable? cleaned ; and, also., about 15 to 20 chains of metal put on worst places Carried. Resolved, That Mr A. Hoff man's letter be sent to the ferryman at the Lower Gorge for an explanation. Proposed by Mr Purkiss, seconded by Mr Wheeler, That tbe Engineer put in an extra culvert on McDonald's road, opposite Newmans property, to relieve the water from Mr Newmans section. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Lethbridge, seconded by Mr Booth, That the action of the Chairman, in accepting the tender of R. Lyon and Son, at 2s 2£d per yard for metalling on Ashurst-Bunny thorpe road ; Lars Larsen's tender of 2s lOd per yard on road from Oroua bridge to Bunnythorpe ,* J. Stewart's tender of 2s lOd per yard for Feilding-Ashurst road to Colyton, and Taonui road from Colyton to railway line, be confirmed ; and that Mr Wheeler's action in accepting the tender of O. Mcllroy, at 2s lOd per yard for metal on Stanway and Makino roads, be also confirmed. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Lethbridge, That, in reply to the letter from the Mayor of Feilding, of the Bth uit., this Board will not consider any necessary deiay in tne erection ox uue bridge over the Kiwitea, on Kimbolton road, as prejudicing the Commissioner's award. — Carried. Resolved, That the Board agree to the offer from J. and S. Gardner, that tbeir household servants, not to be more than two in number, to cross Gorge ferry for L 2 10s per year. Resolved, That a culvert be put across tbe Makino road opposite Mr Manson's woolshed. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Conway, That the Engineer be instructed to have four or five chains of Jeffries road formed as requested by Mr Jeffries, of Bunnythorpe. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Wheeler seconded by Mr Purkiss, That police assistance be applied for to enable the Dog Tax. Collector to discover the owners of dogs at Onepuhi or otherwise destroy t_ie brutes. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Lethbridge, That in reply to Mr Templer, secretary Cheltenham Co-op-erative Dairy Company, That this Board is "willing to make a ford on Forlong's road, providing a sufficient amount of traffic to warrant ths expenditure is likely to take place. The engineer to report as to the probable cost, at next meeting ; also, to get Mr Bell's consent to make approaches to ford. — Carried. A special order re the intention of the Board to raise a loan for the construction of bridge over the Mangaone stream, Ashurst road, was confirmed. Proposed by Mr Boot., seconded by Mr Lethbridge, That the engineer be instructed to have crossings on Makiuo road made as per list. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Pearce seconded by Mr Purkiss, Tbat the engineer be instructed to call for tenders for the erection of the new bridge over Mangaone stream, Feildiug-Ashurst road, tenders to be put in at next meeting ; also, apply for loan for same. — Carried. Messrs Wheeler and Booth reported having inspected the Kiwitea stream where it was said it overflowed its banks, but considered there was no danger. Tho following tenders were received for 12 chains of metalling on Forlong's road and filling in approaches to bridge —A. Managh L 26 10s (accepted), Pask and Charles, L 39 ; Wallan, L 39 18s ; W. Managh L 39 10s ; O. Mcllroy, L 37 9s : 6d. . Accounts were passed for payment and the Board adjourned.
