At the inquest ou tbe body of the man Alexander, who sbot himself on Friday night there was no evidence to account for the act and tho jury returned a verdict of suicide by a gun sbot. CiriusTCHUiicn, August 4. Truth against wbich the Commissioner of the Government Life Insurance Department instituted proceedings for the recovery of damages in respect of certain statements I'egarding the securities in the Department, apologised for those statements in its issue last night and also for tbe allegations concerning the Public Trust and Post Office Saving Bank Securities. The number of men employed by the City authorities and paid out of the winter work fund is 150. Tbe money in hand will last about another fortnight and subscriptions to tbe fund have practically ceased. A number of men discharged from the works waited on tbe Labor Bureau and asked tbat employment might be fouud for them. The agent has commuuicated with the Government. Dunedin, August 4. The wholesale hardware merchants and ironmongers have written to Mr Pinkerton, M.H.R., suggesting that they may be allowed till tbe end of the year to dispose of stocks in band.
