LATER PARTICULARS.

TWO MEN BURNT TO DEATH. (Per Press Association). Palmkrston N., This Day Most of the inmates of the hotel had a narrow escape, aud two men named respectively Walker (a hawker) recently from Victoria, aged 34, and an old man named Maurice Connell were burnt to death in attempting to escape. The origin of the fire is unknown. The second lire occurred a few minutes after in Harty's, fruiterer, on the Square. Harty had a narrow escape. The fire destroyed the shops of Harty, Haydon, grocer, the office of Guy aud Haggitt, solicitors, aud the office of the Drainage Board's Engineer. Very little was saved beyond the Board's books and Guy's papers in his strong room. Guy was insured for £80 in the London and Lancashire ; Haydon's stock £200 in the same office, £500 in the Imperial, aud .£3OO in the Commercial Union. The building was owned by Captain Mowlem, and was insured for £150 in the National, and £650 in the London and Lancashire. Harty, £50 in the Imperial and £100 Alliance. The Empire Hotel was insured for £1000 in tne Commercial Union and £1000 in the National. The stock and furniture were insured in Wellington. Mr Jack was insured for £250 in the New Zealand. The bodies were recovered this morning, but are unrecognisable. Te Aro House, next Mowlem's buildings, was saved with difficulty by the exertions of the brigade. One man burned in the fire got within a few feet of the front door where the body was found. The second was found near the middle of the building. Only the charred trunks were picked up.
