«. (Per Press Association.) London, July 28. An election riot broke out, in Dunstable, and the Riot Act was read. The disturbance was only quelled on the arrival of police reinforcements from London. Tho Hon. Joseph Chamberlain writes to a correspondent that the chiof object of his accepting the Colonial Secretaryship was to endeavour to devise a scheme to bring the Colonies and the Mother Country closer together. The latest returns to date are : —
Four returns yet to come. Later. The not Tory and Unionist gain in the election is 90 seats, equal to 180 votes. Deducting the Liberal majority of 20 in the last Parliament, the new Government have a majority of 145 on a division.
