(Per Press Association.) Wellington, July 25. The House met at 2.30. The motion hy Mr Carnell for leave to iutroduce a Bill to amend the Gaming and Lotteries Act in the direction ot abolishing the use of the totalisator was carried by 40 to 19, and the Bill was read a first time. The Coroners Inquests Bill was committed. On Clause 1 being put, the Hon. W. P. Reeves asked the Hous-3 to remember tLat one phase of this Bill would cause a permanent charge on the Justice Department of £ 1200 per year. He moved that the short title be altered to the Abolition of Coroners Juries Bill. Hon. W. Steward said the Minister had not the courage of his opinion to bring down a Bill to effect his object, but he must try and get it iu!o a private member's Bill by a side wind. Sir Robert Stout hoped coroners' juries would not be abolished. The Premier admitted that there was some force ill Mr Steward's objection to the course proposed, but be thought it as well to take the voice of the House as to whether these juries should be abolished.
