English Elections.
(Per Press Association.) London, July '23. The latest returns are : — Tories and Unionists ... 364 Liberals ... ... 129 Parnellites ... ... 9 Anti-Parnellifces ... ... 57 The sitting members have been returned for Mid-Lanark, West Renfew, Walfcharustow, Caithness, Holderness, South Roscommon, North Wexford. Sir W. V. Harcourt was elected for Monmouth West by 7243 to 1956, polled by Williams (Tory). Sir C. Dilks considers the chief cause of the Liberal overthrow is the withdrawal of Gladstone's great personality, which has not been replaced by Rosebery, who is almost unknown to the mass of electors. Re-elected— J.Williams (L), Mansfield. At Tottenham, Howard (T) beat C. Edwards. July 24. The Times stronply urges that Mr Gully be re-elected speaker of the House of Commons in order to demonstrate the non-partisan character of the position. The Times considers the result of the elections a more emphatic protest against Home Bnle than even in 1886, and says the Liberals ought now to renounce an impossible struggle.
