A Destructive Fire.

TERRIBLE DEVASTATION. (Per Press Association.) Sydney, July 22. The fire in Block 11 mine has been rag. ing all day, and is gaining ground. Work in the mine has been susDended, and efforts are directed to confining the fire to the upper levels, where it started. All channels and passages are being blocked with the object of smothering the flames, and largo quantities of water are being poured on from the adjacent mines and dams. It this fails, preparations will be made, as a last resort, to fire heavy charges of powder, and cause the ground to subside, and so prevent the fire from spreading. This will entail the destruction of much valuable machinery and other property. Six firemen working underground were overcome by the flames and rescued with difficulty, one in a serious condition. Mr O'Brien, Deputy Superintendent of the Fire Brigade, left Melbourne to-night to take charge of the operations.
