ANOTHER ACCOUNT OF THE CATASTROPHE.
Invercargilii, July 21. Two Gore bailiffs went to the house of John Keown, farmer, at Balfour, yesterday to execute a warrant. Keown after telling them to stop, fired and shot Hugh Stewart about the head, and he fell from his horse. Middlemiss galloped away and acquainted the police at the different stations, stating that Stewart was dead. Keown was arrested at 1 a.m. and Stewart was then alivo, but he must be badly hit as he was not able to move from where he fell. No telephone communication can be got with Balfour today. Constable Hernny, from Waikaia, was the first to reach Keown's house. He found him in bed, and told him he was a constable, to which Keown responded that he supposed he had come to arrest him for shooting the man outside. Keown is a middle-aged man with a family and it is said that he has been drinking lately. This Day. John Keown was charged at the Police Court with shooting with intent to murder Hugh Stewart. On the application of the Police, who stated that the victim was in a very low condition, a remand was granted for a week.
