Football Hews.
Birmingham defeated Pohaugiua, at Colyton, on Saturday last, by 8 points to nil. Moran scored 2 tries for the winners, of which Burne converted. The Wanganui Collegiate School defeated Palmerston on Saturday by 16 points to nil. Auckland defeated Poverty Bay on Saturday by 14 points to nil. The last of the Senior Cup matches was played at Palmerston on Saturday last between the Pirate aud Feilding teams aud resulted after a very evenly contested game in a win for the visitors by 3 points (a try) to nil. The spectators were numerous aud decidedly partial and evidently thought that the local team only was possible of displaying any play worthy of applause. Shannon won the toss and Feilding defended the southern goal. In the early part of the game Rockley, a Pirate three-quar-ter, played with a great deal of clash, while Robinson, for Feildiug, put in a lot of useful work, aud very soon the Feilding forwards, who were all working hard, brought the play into the Pirates' 25's, and Sanson got over the line. jFor some reason tho referee called the ball back and the score was disallowed, a scrum taking place five yards away from tho line. A few moments after this " Scaudrctt," who was playing a clever aud hard working game, sprained his ankle and he continued playing uuder very great difficulty. Once again tho visitors pressing the Pirates' hard and the dashing play of Sanson, Giesen, Johnston, and Smith brought tho ball again to the Pirate line aud Sanson, after a very determined effort, once again got over the line. He took the kick at goal himself which was at a very difficult angle, but failed to in ci ease the score. At half-time the play was very even and the excitement, when the game commenced again, ran very high. During the second spell the Feilding backs were playing up very well aud the continuous passing from Jack, Shannon, Richards, Giesen, and Robinson was very pretty and showed a great improvement in the visitors play. The Pirate forwards played with no end of dash and the last 20 minutes play was very fast. At several times both sides looking very much like scoring, but the excellent defence of Robinson, Giesen and Lloyd proved quite secure for Feilding, while Rockley and Richards served their side good stead. Mr Weckes acted as referee and Messrs Hall and Strachan were the line umpires.
