D. Hayter, Sfc George's; Marks, Tory, Kensington North; Sharpe, Tory, Radcliffe; Cum, Farnworth; Mellor, Tory, Camarthen District. July 18. Sitting members returned :—Brigdton, Sir G. Trey lan; Glasgow Central, Baird. The Unionists gain the College (Glasgow), Sir J. S. Maxwell, Tory. Mr J. Chamberlain's election speeches lead to the belief that he will encourage and support Huddart Parker's Pacific line, and the scheme relating to the extention of trade with Cape Colony. July 18. Sitting members returned are—Bttrt, Willougnby, Newdigate, Einiber, Tollomache, Hart, Dj'ke, Taylor, and Bagot. Re-elected unopposed—-Power, T. Snlli-. van, Roche, Minch, Buckwill, McDer« uaott, Kilbride, and Flynn, also the members for East Berk?, Rye, and Renfrew. Long, Tory, elected unopposed, for Evesham; Giles, Tory, beat Brand, Liberal, at Wisbeach by 223; Greeton, Tory, elected for Derby South ; Jones, Liberal, for Swansea District; Milward, Tory, for Stratford ; Blundell, Tory, for Insurance, beating Wood, sitting Labour member; Lawrie, Tory, returned unopposed for Pembroke and Hayerford; Hopkinson, Unionist, for North Wilts. Polling for Newcastle was—Hammond, Tory, sitting member, 12,883; Kruddas, Tory, 12,170; these two were elected, beating J. Morley, Chief Secretary for Ireland in last Government, who polled 11,862; Craig, Radical, polled 11,154; and Hammel, Labour candidate, 2302. Newcastle thus falls completely into the hands of the Tories. The present state of the parties is as follows: — Tories and Unionists ... ... 291 Liberals and Irish members ... 103 Where Liberals have been re-elected, their majorities have been iranienely reduced. Heavy majorities were polled against the Labor candidates. Sir Wm. V. Harcourt declared that after the bursting of the storm he had decided not to retire but to remain and fight for the old cause.
