Frozen Meat Scheme.
o [Per Press Association.] - Timaru. July 15. A meeting of about fifty pastoralists and graziers was held this afternoon to hear Mr M. C. Orbell, of Geraldine, explain his scheme for a co-operative company to control the frozen meat trade. Mr Orbeli's scheme resembles that of Mr Nathan, hut he puts the capital required roughly at £2,000,000 and proposes to ask the Government guarantee on £500,000 debenture capital at 4 per cent, any payments under the guarantee to be made good by. a general sheep tax of Jd per head. Mr Acton supported the scheme, and in doing so emphatically denied that the quality of mutton had in any degree deteriorated compared with past years as reported by Messrs Nelson Bros. Mr Elworthy admitted the necessity for a consideration of the position, but strongly condemned the proposed scheme of State aid. No motion was proposed as to Mr Orbell's scheme, but it was resolved to ask the Minister for Agriculture to convene a mooting of delegates from agricultural and pastoral societies, farmers' clubs, and freezing companies to consider the position of the trade* One or two persons expressed doubts of the oufficency of a capital of .£2,000,000.
