BAROMETERS.
TO TIIE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sin, — The writer of the paragraph re Barometers, published in this even- | ing's Stab, must have great confidence j in his instrument when he seems to state so positively that the correct reading of the Barometer this morning was 30-75 inches, whereas, according to the hoaxing of an amateur observer, it would appear in a Marton contemporary as 29 75 inches only. Now I am very much disposed to think that the reading of the amateur observer referred to is likely to be more correct than that of your informant. No scientific instruments vary so much as Barometer?, owing to incorrect adjust ment, and it would, I am sure, be difficult to find any two Barometers in Failding telling the same tale. Mine registered 3011 this morning and 29-75 on the 11th instant. I don't pretend to know much on the subject of barometers, which is a ve.y difficult one. The increase in the altitude of a Barometer from sea level, where in certain states of the atmosphere it should register 28 inches, is, of cuurse, considerable, but it requires a professed scientist to judge that increase. For ordinary purposes the chief use of a Barometer is to enable one to guess at weather prospects. I am, etc., Saml. Goodbeiiere. P.S.— lf your informant's reading of 30 75 inches is correct we should be looking forward to some excessively fine and dry weather. — S Gr. Feilding, July 15th, 1895.
