Pohangina County Council.
The rnonhtly meeting of the above was held at Pohaugina on Saturday last. Present — Crs H. Dickiu (chairman) H. Fraser, R. W. Brown, 0. Selby, A. A. Wagstaff, E. Bell, W. Vicary. The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was received and dealt with as follows : — From R. Port, stating he was willing to have telephone station at his residence. From J. Whitaker, asking permission to make a small drain on the road side in front of his fence. — Granted, subject; to Engineer's approval. From Maugere Road Board, asking this Council to support it in requesting Government to alter system of rating for charitable aid. From W. H. and A. L. Littte, asking the Council to form road fronting sections 29 aud 30. j From W. F. Marsh, asking that loan proposals for loau in which he is interested be advertised in the Star. From Commissioner of Crown Lancia, stating section 108, Block XIV, Apiti, had been vested in County for road and ferry purposes ; also, stating there was no power to vest municipal reserves in County, but he would ask the Minister to have provision inserted in the Act ; also, he would not at present, owing to pressure of work, go into the mattor of vesting gravel reserves in Council. From H. Osborne and W. F. Marsh agreeing to pay cost of taking poll if not carried. From Engineer and Secretary Fitzherbert District Office, asking if this Council would allow their Engineer to prepare an estimate for a proposed road in his district. From F. Jennings, asking the Council to remit rates this year as he paid last year when he had no need to ; R. Currie, re the same matter. — To be informed the Council has no power to refund rates collected in the Umutoi riding for yeai 1094-5. From E. F. Eagar, drawing attention to the state of the culvert on Main Cross road causing overflow on to his property. — Referred to the Engineer. From Mayor Feilding Borough asking this Council to agree to deferring erection of bridge on Kimbolton road without prejudice. From Mrs N. P. Griffiths, Pohangina asking that copies of plans, etc., of tend ers be left at her business premises foi convenience of contractors. — To be in formed present arrangements cannot be altered. Young, Palmerston N asking if this Council had any totara fo for sale. —To be informed the Counci has none for sale. From manager Marton Mercury, ap plying for share of Council's advertising From Secretary Palmerston Hospita Board, stating that no change could b made in representation until the end o current triennial period. From C. P. Jensen, Birmingham, stai ing he would hold the Council responsi ble for damage done to his propert; through work done on road.— Referrei to Engineer. From G. Buckman, asking that roa< opposite section 159, Apiti, be cleared — To be informed the Council has n funds to clear road in the Apiti town ship at present. From Manawatu Times, requestini share of Council's advertising. From R. Geange, asking permissioi to fell bush on road-line in Apiti. From F. Pirani, M.H.R., a telegram r< Bill amending Counties Act, and statin; there would be no difficulty in passing through Council. From Secretary to Treasury, re loans of £950, £300, £1750, stating the specia tolls must bear certificate to the effed that they were compiled from the exist ing ratepayers roll as at the dates when the polls of the ratepayers were taken on the several above-mentioned loan proposals ; also, asking if portion of the £300 loan was intended for expenditure in the Kiwitea County and also, wbethei Cr Bell's woolshed, where the poll was taken, was within the Coal Creek riding. The Engineer's report was road show ing : — Awahou riding — A great numbei of slips had come down on all newly formed roads, and will entail graat expenditure to keep open. Mr G. Lyne had commenced to fence each side of road diversion through bis property. He urged repairing bridge near Mr Henson-'s on main road south. Tamaki riding— E. J. McDcrmott has fin: shed his contract ; also Messrs Hirsfc and Co. The slips had been removed from newly formed roads. The newly formed road through the forest reserve is in a fearful condition. There is a subsidy of £100 for repairing this road, but it would not be advisable to let contract until spring. Umutoi riding— A few slips have been cleared away and watertables cleared out on sidlings. A man has been engaged sowing grass seed on road lines. Mangaone riding — Roads are in fair order. He had instructed the roadman to repair bridge, and a culvert near Mr Finnis'. The culvert on Ferry road has been repaired and drain cleaned out leading down Ferry road and, also, on upper side of Pohangina Valley road. A slip has started on Mr Selby's property on the Valley road and by appearances, will occasion some trouble and expense. A few small slips came down during the month but have been .cleared away. Pohaugina riding— Two men had been engaged fasciuing drain in Pohangina township ; also had planted willow ci t.ings in parts. He drew attention to great damago done to road between Mr Sinclairs' and the sawmill by , Messrs Adsett and Roberts' heavy traffic, they carting extra largo totara logs over it. These heavy loads also damaged bridge in township. Coal Creek riding— He had been busy preparing plans, &c, for work in this riding. Mangapikopiko tiding -Plans, etc., rf Lad been prepared for works in this riding and tenders called. The contractor for drain had not started the work yet. The roads
j are in fair order considering the weather. I General— This has been an exception- ; ally busy month so far as clerical work ■ was concerned. The auditor had audited the accounts. j Mr C. Lucas waited on the Council ■ with reference to his dismissal as a roadj man. He was dismissed by the Engi* j neer on the authority of two Councillors.
