The suggestion was not accepted and the motion to adjourn the Council to try and arrange a compromise was also rejected, whereupon Mr Beehan, the Secretary, resigned, and with two delegates of the Liberal Association, left the meeting. Fawcus was selected a candidate by 22 to 2. The Women's Christian Temperance Union support Mr Monk's candidature for the city. Christchurch, July 11.
