Q RIDICULOUS PRICES FOR LONG WOOLLED SHEEP. (Per Press Association). Sydney, July 8. The sale of longwool 6heep openec to-day almost disastrously, there be ing no activity in the market, while little better than boiling- down prices were obtained. The catalogue consisted chiefly of New Zealand sheep, and the bulk were passed in. When the first lot from Tasmania and New South Wales were put up it was evident there was going to be a difficulty in realising decent prices. Sixteen pure Leicesters fetched a quarter of a guinea, then half a guinea was about the best offer, with one or two exceptions, till the New Zealand animals reached fifteen. Border Leicesters, on account of Grieve* Southland, brought threequarters of a guinea each; 10 ram hoggets, 10s 6d ; Andrew's lot were passed in. Grey's (Otago) lot brought 10s 6d each for 20 Border Leicesters. Lang's (Oamaru) Romney rams and Reid's (Elderslie) Lincolns were passed in. Reid sold 5 stud Romney rams for llsGdeach, 60 flock Lincolns at 15s 9d, and 135 at 10s 6d. The same owner's Romneys were passed in. Tanner obtained 2 ls to 33s 4d for 3 stud Lincoln rams, and 2 ls each for 3 selected Lincoln rams. Some animation was displayed when 3 special stud Lincolns and 1 Leicester were offered on account of Matthew Holmes. They averaged £18 7s 6il each, while 30 Leicester Block rams brought 21a each. Thirty selected Lincoln rams, on account of Ormond (Napier) ranged from 21s to 425. Mungavin's (Porirua) Romneys passed without enquiry. Mackenzie's (Hawke's Bay), Threlkeld's (Flaston), Chamber's and Bowler Bros, were similarly treated. Twenty-five Border Leicester hoggets, on account of McCrosbie (Southland) brought 10s 6d. One stud Lincoln of Sutton's (Invercargill) brought £26 6s, 5 others ranging from £1 16s 9d to £8 i 6s 3d. Ten Lincoln hoggets brought £2 2s, 46 selected Lincoln rams £1 10s 6d, and 10 ewes of the same owner £2 2s. The sales will be continued to-morrow and will be devoted entirely to New Zealand. This Day. The Government have received a letter from the New Zealand Government announcing quarantine will be enforced against cattle and sheep. This has caused consternation among the New Zealand sheepbreeders taking part in the Stud Sheep Fair, some of whom contemplated re-shipping their stock, owing to the low prices ruling at the sales.
