The Imperial Defence Committee in the Cabinet consists of the Duke of Devonshire, tlic Right Hon. A. Balfour, the Right Hon. J. Chamberlain, the Marquis of Landsdowne, Lord George Hamilton, the Right Hon. G. J. Goschen, and Sir Michael Hicks-Beach. The Hon. H. Matthew, Q.C., M.P. for Birmingham East, has been created a Peer. Ten thousand persons attended the political meeting at Albert Hall. Lord Rosebery, replying to taunts, said the Radicals gloried in being Imperialists, and he hoped that the Marquis of Salisbury would confirm the British withdrawal from Chitral. July 7. Mr Chamberlain, speaking in London, said the Government would deal with < the immigration oi foreign paupers and also the importation of foreign prisonmade goods. Parliament has been prolonged to July 24. Lord Salisbury, speaking in the House of Lords, delivered the election manifesto of his party : He advocated relief to agriculture by reducing taxation bearing thereon ; legislation regarding agricultural holdings, and railway freights, and on farm produce ; revision of the poor laws ; assistance to workers to enable them to buy thicr own freeholds which would add powerful bulwarks to the tradition of the country, and place its tranquility on an irremovable foundation. He said the Tories aimed at avoiding revolutionary changes, and hinted at a measure for the relief of those reduced to poverty by great vicissitudes of trade.
