(Per Press Association.) Wellington, July 4. Chas. Waters, who was before the Court for bigamy a few days ago, on which occassiou the S.M. dismissed the charge on the ground that he had no jurisdiction in respect of an offence committed in England, lias been sued by his second wife, Jane Russell, for .£2OO clamages, for marrying h er while his first wife was alive. The case has been before the Court several times, and to-day the S.M. reserved bis decision. In the Supremo Court to-day Justice Richmond gave judgment inj the case of Queen against Remnant, in which the question was whether a contractor could recover from the Crown the sum which it had paid to workmen for wages by virtue of an attachment order under the Workmen's Act. The Magistrate had given judgment against the Crown and this was now upheld, the appeal being dismissed with costs. The Tariff Commission entertain Major Stewart at a banquet in Bellamy's this evening. Ixvkkcargill, July 5. John James Meikle is forwarding a petition to Parliament, asking for £10,000 for compensation for false imprisonment for sheep stealing, and that 1113 name be removed from the police records of the Colony. Stratford, July 5. It has been decided to form a Co-op-erative Society with a capital of .£20,000. A large portion of the capital has been subscribed. Auckland, July 5. With reference to the City election Mr Shera telegraphs from Te Aroha that his candidature depends on whether heissati&fied that the great body of the electors desire his services. Efforts are being renewed by the Opposition Party to induce Mr Sheppard Allen to re-consider his decision. Cheistchurch, July 4. The police have received information from Culverden that the body of a man name unknown, supposed to be a swagger, has been found dead in the snow 14 miles beyond the Clarence Riyer Road, between Clarence and Jollies, which is impassable for horse and trap. On account of the depth of snow ifc is impossible to remove the body at present. Dunedin, July 5. Reports concerning stock in the high country in many parts of Otago are somewhat discouraging. Morven Hills Station is likely to suffer seriously. Of 300,000 acres, only about 30,000 are not under snow, and owing to the dry ness of summer feed is scarce. It is feared that only the very strong amongst 10.0000 sheep will survive the winter. There is also likely to be severe mortality at Hawkolm Station. Steps are being taken to have a petition opposing the Estates Company's Lottery signed in 40 churches in and around Dunedin on Sunday. At the coursing meeting the Waterloo Cup -was won by Shylock, who beat Here's to 'E in the final round. Auckland, July 5. The Rev. James Wallis, Wesleyan missionary, died to-day of bronchitis, aged S7.
