Volunteer Items.
O The Manchester Rifles were inspected by Lieut-Col. Newall last night in the Volunteer Hall. Captain Kirton, Lieut. Bray and thirty-one members were present. After the usual iuspection Capt. Kirton, Lieut. Bray, Col-Sergt. Milson, and Sergt. Petherick put the corps through some company movements. At the conclusion of the parade the Colonel warmly congratulated the officers and men on the very excellent hall they had erected for themselves. The report and balance-sheet of the corps were read, and their discussion held over until another drill night. Volunteers James Scott, G. H. Saywell, and Wilson were appointed members ot the hall committee. The report regretted having lost the services of Lieut. J, W. F. Halcombe ; congratulated the corps on the erection of the hall and, also, on the fact that the Defence Department has promised an annual grant of £10 for lighting ; that the company had been favorably reported on to the Defence Department by the Inspecting Officer, and the Officer Commanding the District, both as regards the standard of the men and their general efficiency. Under the new regulations more work and greater responsibility had been placed on the non commissioned officers, but they had risen to the occasion and proved themselves the right men in the right place. In future all meetings in connection with the bnsiness of the corps will be held in the orderly room in the hall. The assets of the corps were valued at .£157.
