RAILWAYS RETURNS.
The following are the traffic returns for the Napier-Taranaki section for the four weeks ending "25th May 189-1, and for the corresponding four weeks in ism •
In 1895 49G24 passengers were carried as against 53,505 for 1894, in 1895 only 14,718 tons of goods were carried as against 17,558 tons for 1894, a remarkable falling off in both instances ; but taking the whole revenue for both Islands up to date the grand total in 1895 was £193,224 lGs kl as against £193,400 0s 7d for 1594. This is somewhat encouraging after all. Local and General News. « The Borough Council will meet on Thursday next. The Debating Society will meet in Mr Bray's office this evening at 7.30. The Manchester Road Board will meet on Saturday next. A plain and fancy dress ball will be held at the Pohangina Public Hnil on Friday next. A concert will be held in the Taonui school house on Friday evening nest in aid of the school fund. An advertiser wants about ten acres of land with dwelling house, situated within a few miles of Feilding. Mass in Halconibe on Sunday next, at 8 a.m., and in Feilding at 11 a.m. : also, evening service in Feilding at 3. The funeral of the late infant son of Mr Egbert Fitzherbert will leave his parents' residence, Warwick street, tomorrow morning, at 9.30, for the Feilding cemetery. A cynical Feilding man says that in order to show what a free country this is, a Bill has been introduced in the in the Upper House to muzzle the Judges of the Supreme Court, and another in the Lower House to gag the press. Our own correspondent writes : — Coming events in Pohaugina — Musical melange, at 7.30, by the Salvation Army, 4th July ; grand plain and fancy dress ball, at 8 p.m., sth July ; Divine service in the Hall, at 3 p.m., 7th July ; County County meeting, 13tb July. District Judge Kettle pointed out in the Bankruptcy Court at Masterton on Friday that people seemed to treat printed affidavits very lightly. Several cases had been brought under his notice in which persons bad signed their names to affidavits without having the slightest knowledge of their contents. At the School Committee meeting last evening a cominitteeman drew attention to the somewhat sudden and mysterious disappearance of the school firewood, and feelingly remarked that he supposed some individual had annexed the wood to roast his fowls — thirteen having been missed from his yard. The Manawatu Timber Company have an advertisement in to-day which should prove of interestjto builders. The Company keep in their yard an extensive stock of timber and any order will receive prompt attention. They also keep in stock turnery and mouldings of every description. The export of woollen goods from the United Kingdom to the United States during October, November, December and January last showed an increase in value of from i' 400,864 to £1,160,265, as compared with the same months in the previous year. This unprecedented increase is considered to be due almost entirely to a genuine revival in trade, and should be welcome news in Australia. The Library Committee met last ovenin«. Present— Messrs Stevens (chairman), Cobbe, Allan, McLean and Watson. In view of the extra expenditure that would be entailed in fitting up the new library quarters, when built, it was decided to reserve funds for that purpose. Messrs Stevens and Watson were authorised to expend L 2 on new books during the current month, Mr Watson offered to give a lecture in aid of tho library funds, and bis offer was accepted with thanks, those present beiu" appointed a committee to carry out arrangements. Single tickets will be issued to Wauganui on that day and "will be available for return on the Thursday. The Bruce County Council has gone dead against bicycles. Under its by laws any bicyclist must dismount on meeting an3 T one riding a horse or vehicle two chains off and stick the cycle into the fence till the horse gets past. Any cyclist passing a horse ridden or^'riven must reduce speed on passing. We regret to have to announce the death of the wife of Mr E. Martin, who succumbed at 4 o'clock this morning, at her husband's residence, Feilding, at the early age of twenty - four years. We tender Mr Martin our sincerest sympathy in his sad bereavement. The funeral will take place on Thursday morning, leaving Mr Martin's residence for the Feildiug cemetery at 9.30 a.m. The lowest temperature ever recorded on the earth was taken at Worchojansk, in the interior of Siberia, January 15, 18S5. It was 90 degrees and a fraction below zero. There the earth is frozen to a depth of about 100 ft, and in the warmest season it never thaws. The highest temperature recorded is 124 degrees and a fraction, taken in Algeria, Jnlv 14 1879. The Band of Hope meeting in the Temperance Hall last evening was largely attended by juveniles. A good programme was provided and Mr Simpson acted as chairman. Recitations were given by John Hodge, Lilly Thompson, Irene Garlick, Ada Svendson,Leslie Thompson, Mary Eddlcstone, and Nancy Waddington. Songs were rendered by Misses Carthew and James, and Mr Hoppy. Miss Florrie Cooper gave a piano solo, the Misses Carthew a duet, John Thomas a reading, Miss Ross a violin solo, and Janet Bray a solo. On the whole those present passed an enjoyable evening.
