THE MUNICIPAL BUILDING TENDERS.
10 THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir, —l am surprised that our wise Councillors, after having advertised for teuders for the erection of our Municipal Buildings in papers published in other towns, can reject the tender of Mr Banks, which was the lowest in all the four different specifications, on the ground that he is not a local man. As Mr Banks has been living several years in Birmingham, getting his material from Feilding and district and, moreover, is a ratepayer, while Mr Young has only been a few months in Feilding, and is not a ratepayer, and, as both contractors would get their hands and material in tbis district, I fail to see on what grounds our wise Councillors can reject Mr Banks' tender, as both men are first-class tradesmen and turn out their work in a satisfactory manner. I hop© that our City Fathers will see their way to make some resfcit»tion to Mr Banks for the time, trouble, and expense" wbich they have needlessly caused him, which must have, amounted to close on £3. And I bope that tbe next time they advertise for tenders for any work tbat they will insert on the top of their advertisement, in large print, "To local residents only. Witb regard to the brick party wall, I question very much if the Council can suspend the building bye-law just whenever it suits them, especially as the ratepayers voted for the loan on the understanding that the building would be erected with a brick party wall, according to the bye-law. I regret very much that such an expensive building should be built of timber wbich has only been allowed three mouths to season, as it can't possibly season in tho time, even although cut when the -ap is down. There is a Latin proverb exj)crientia docct —but not our wise Councillors. I am, etc, C. L. Daniel. Feilding, June 27th, 1895.
