(Per Press Association). London, June 22. The barque Stoneleigh, of 2131 tons, which left Melbourne for London on February 27th, is reported to be lost The news, however, requires confirmation. Re-insurances are being effected at 70 guineas. June 23. Professor Huxley is rallying. The correspondent of the Manchester Guardian states that London influences militate against the efforts to open direct trade for colonial produce between Manchester and Australia. A wealthy firm is prepared to build the necessary steamers for trade and accept part payment in shares. The vessels are to touch at Capetown. Mr Young declares that his experience of the season for fruit shows a profitable trade in Australia. Apples are assured if well selected aud packed, and must maintain standard quality.
