'Frisco Mail Service.

(per press association.) Auckland, June 20 With the view of improving the San Francisco mail service, the present contractors, the Union Steam Ship Company, and the Oceanic Company have made an offer to Government conditional on a guarantee of continuance of the subsidy for the mails for a period ot seven years to improve the service by \ building tbree new steamers larger than the present vessels and capable ot steaming from Auckland to 'Frisco in 17 days, thus enabling a mail to reach London in 27 days from New Zealand, also to extend tbe service to Vancouver, if necessary. This offer lias already been made to the Hon Mr Ward.
