Feilding Borough Council.

A special meeting of the Council was held last evening to consider tenders for the municipal buildings. Present— The Mayor (Mr W. A. Sandilands), Crs. E. Goodbehere, H. Worsfold, G. H. Saywell, G. W. Fowles, J. Gould, A. R. Allan, J. P. Cowie, and W. A. L. Bailey. Cr Chamberlain sent an apology for non-attendance. The sub-committee appointed to | deal with the tenders reported as follows : — " Your committee beg to report that they have considered the several tenders received for the erection of the municipal buildings in terms of the plans and specifications exhibited at Messrs James and Heaps' office. Your committee would recommend the acceptance ot Mr Young's tender, at £889, if the Council should decide to dispense with a brick party wall between the proposed building and the adjoining section on the Kimbolton road frontage. Jfaving regard, however, to the future, and as a means of providing as far as possible against tuch a contingency as fire, your coinrnittes strongly urge tho Council to provide for the party wall above referred to, and, in the event of the Council adopting the views of the committee, would suggest the acceptance of Mr R. Heald's tender, at £993, plus £5 extra for tongued and groved lining instead of plain lining." The Mayor explained the reason the committee recommended giving the contract to Mr Young in preference to Mr Banks (whose tender was the lowest) was because they considered a local resident should have preference. Heald, £948; Rimaier and Craven, £1240 ; Bennett and Co., £1200. Proposed by Cr Goodbehere, seconded by Cr Bailey, 'J hat the tender of Mr B. Heaid for the Municipal Council Chambers, as per plans and specifications, No. 3, with brick party wall and T and G lining, at the price of £973 be accepted. — Negatived. — For the motion : The Mayor, Crs Bailey, Goodbehere, Fowles ; against : Crs Allan, Gould, Saywel), Worsfold, and Cowie. The Councillors who opposed the resolution explained their reasons for voting against it was that, considering the financial position of the Borough was not very encouraging, they could not see their way to vote away general revenue for tho purpose, seeing the roads and bridges were so much in need of repair. They would have preferred the outside party wall to have been built of brick if it could have been done out of the loan. The architect, Mr T. H. James, who was present, explained that the reason for the tenders being above the ori ginal estimated cost of LBOO was that the whole building had been made several feet larger and other alterations made, including a brick wall between the Fire Brigade station and the municipal chambers, to the extent of between £80 and £90 worth of work. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Fowles, That the tender of R. Young for the erection of the municipal buildings, at the price of LBB9, as per contract No. 1, be accepted ; and that the building bye-law be suspended to enable the Council to erect the building in terms of the specifications. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Allan, seconded by Cr Gould, That the Mayor and Cr Bailey be appointed to accept tender and affix seal on same. — Carried. The Council then adjourned.
