INQUEST.
An inquest was held this morning on the remains of James McDade, at the Empire Hotel, before Mr Jas. Linton, coroner, and the following jury : — Messrs J. B. Hamilton (foreMian), M. Belfit, D. Spalding, S. S. RatlifF, W. Bramwell, and H. Roe. The witnesses, F. England and J. Ranson (junr.), gave evidence as to deceased's actions for the past two weeks ; of his complaining of a bad cold ; and of their removing him to i Feilding yesterday, when he died on the journey down. Jas. Garland gave evidence to the. effect that he believed deceased was a native of County Antrim, Ireland, and that he had served in the 57th Regi* ment. Dr Johnston deposed to being'called on at about 3.30 yesterday afternoon by England and Ranson, who had driven McDade to Feilding, and that witness, on examining the body, found deceased must have died an hour previous ; deceased's face was livid, and rigor mortis had set in ; the features were perfectly placid, and it seemed he must have died without pain or suffering of any kind ; he believed death resulted from failure of the heart's action ; he had not stated deceased had died of typhoid fever. Constable Tuohy gave evidence of being informed of the death and to removing the body to where it lay, at the Empire Hotel j he had examined the body, and there were no marks of violence; he believed deceased had no property. The jury returned a verdict, "That the deceased, James McDade, died from natural causes from failure of the heart's action."
