THE GAMBLING EVIL. (Per Press Association). Dunedin, June 17. At the close of his sermon on Sunday night, when he denounced gambling, the Rev. R. Waddell, of St. Andrew's Church, called upon everyone willing to make a solemn promise neyer to make or take a a bet or visit a racecourse, to stand up. The whole congregation, with two or three exceptiops, etopd up, At the Magistrate's Court at Miiton, Alan Boyd, of North Taieri, who was driving with his shepherd on the 24th of May when the latter met with an acci dent which resulted in his death, was fined L 2 and costs for being drunk while in charge of a vehicle on the main road. Francis Grant, a Milton publican, who supplied the two men with liquor, was fined L 5 and costs. A young man named Percy Harrison, against whom nothing was known, was let oif with two months' imprisonment on three charges of larceny from three different shops. New Plymouth, This Day. Johnston, who was before tbe Court to? day for breaking into a jeweller's shop at Inglewood and stealing a watch and cruit Btand, was committed for trial. Wellington, June 17. The local rainfall since the first of the month was 5.295 inches. The average for the whole month the previous year was only 5.213 inches. The close season for seals is to be extended for another year from June 30th. The Hon. J. McKenzie is improving in health. The Government intend to light the departmental buildings by electricity. Tisiaru, June 17. A. McLaughlin, formerly secretary of the Timaru branch of New Zealand Worker's Union, pleaded guilty at the Magistrate's Court to-day to the embezzlement of L 2 10s, collected for the union, and was sentenced to two months' hard labor. Charges respecting five other sums of Ll2 15s in all were then withdrawn. Auckland, June 17. Tbe branch the N.Z: Institute of Journalists elected W. Douglas president. The credit balance is nearly Lli. Tbe commit* cc of the Chamber of Commerce interviewed Mr McGowan, Commissioner of Taxes, re income tax returns. After hia full explanation those present expressed themselves satisfied. The directors of the Talisman Company decided to day to accept the offer made by an English syndicate to purchase the mine.
