The Debating Society will meet tomorrow evening at 7.30. The N.Z. Alliance has fixed July 3rd and 4th for the Temperance Convention. Additions are made to-day to Messrs Abraham and Williams Colyton, Awahuri and Palmerston stock sales. Additions are made to the list of entries for Messrs Gorton and Son's Cainpbelltown sale. Major Harris, M.H.R. for Franklin, has been offered the position of Government whip, resigned by F. Lawry, M.H.R. The price of bread in Marton has been raised to 3£ the 21b loaf consequent on the continued advance in the price of flour. Mr John Saxon gives notice that he intends to apply to the Manawatu County Council for a license to slaughter great and small cattle. The annual examination of the pupil teachers under the Wanganui Education Board will commence in the Boys School on Tuesday next. Mr James Calders, a Napier telegraph- ! ist, bad tbe top of one of bis fingers chopped off in a pork butcher's sausage machine on Friday last, while feeling if tbe knives were sharp. The body of a man named John Cox ■was found in a gravel pit near Marton last Saturday morning. His clothes and hat, containing bis watch and some money, "were found on the edge of the pit. It is supposed to be a case of suicide. A very pleasing ceremony took place at Jackeytown last Friday, when the School Committee made a presentation to Mr E. H. Rogers, who has been teacher of the Jackeytown school for the past nine years and has recently been promoted to Awahuri. ! A concert will be held in the Birmingham Town Hall, to-morrow night at 7.30., when a presentation will be made to Mr Thomas Lowes by the trustees of tbe Wesleyan Church, The leading vocalists in the district have promised to assist and a good entertainment should result. A concert will be held in the Colyton Hall to-morrow evening in aid of the Church of England building fund. In addition to the most popular local vocali ists, several singers from Feilding have promised to assist, including Miss Diamond, Messrs Matheson, Johnston and Tres»der. The bush correspondent of the Napier News says : — Young totara trees have been grown successfully for some time by a settler at Mabarahara. They do very well under cultivation and should I be more extensively planted, as totara is one of the most valuable of New ZeaZealand timbers. Mr D. Buick has filed the following notice of motion for the next annual meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club ; — " That it be an instruction to the incoming Committee to take into their favorable consideration tbe advisability of holding a two-days' spring meeting in conjunction with the A. and P. Show. — Standard. The volunteers of the colony will be much pleased with the news that Sir Arthur Douelas bas been appointed to succeed Colonel Hume as Under-Secre-tary for Defence. Sir Arthur has bad considerable experience and has at the same time strong sympathies with the volunteers. Mr Mayo, who has been engaged by the Government to give practical instruction to farmers and gardeners, and who was at Marton on Friday, speaks very highly of the capabilities of the district for fruit growing, especially apples. He speaks highly of the Cauipbelltown land for fruit growing as well a 9 the Paraekaretu and the Pohangina. Scientific men are making such rapid progress in knowledge concerning electricity that it is affirmed in a very few years dwellings and public places will be lighted by electricity stored in the premises in receptacles made for the purpose. All a householder will have to do will be to send his " jar to be filled " at intervals at a very trifling charge. The wife of the Mayor of Gore recently gave birth to a son, and at the next meeting of the Borough Council the following resolution was passed:— ' That the unmarried councillors be instructed to inspect the latest municipal arrival and report at the next meeting.' The Mayor, assuming an air of becoming gravity said he could not accept the motion, which | was quite out of order. Members of tbe local Oddfellows lodge to the number of twenty-six paraded at the Foresters' Hall yesterday morning and marched to the Primitive Methodist Church, where Bro Cocker preached an impressive sermon. The young members marched in front with tbe officers behind, all being in full regalia. G,M. Bro. Saywell and P.P.G.M. Bro. Parker acted as marsballs of the procession. Several meetings of sub-committees of the A. and P. Association were held on Saturday afternoon. The Schedule Committee allocated a nuviber of special prizes given for specific objects, including first and second prizes of Al and 10s for the best boy and girl rider under 15, and £'6 and L 2 for the fyest rider of lady's hacks. A high jump for horses was also added to the programme, a special prize L 2 2s being promised.— Standard.

Mr Weighfcinan and bis sons of the Sherwood nursery, Mount Stewart, have donated 25 evergreens and 25 oak trees to plant in Manchester Square. Notice is given to-day that Mr Chas. Stannard has been appointed manager of the Palmerston branch of the United Farmers' Alliance, Ltd. A prohibition order was issued this morning against Ruera te Nuku, an aboriginal native, on the application ot R. Drury, to have effect for twelve montes j in Feilding, Palmerston, Awahuri, Sandon, Halcombe, Cheltenham, Colyton, Ashurst, Birmingham, Apiti and Rangiwahia, Messrs Sherwill and Sandilands, J.P.s, were the presiding justices. A pleasant ceremony took place at the Wanganui Herald office last Saturday evening, when three members of the staff— Messrs J. J. Boyle, R. W. Comyns and C. Ewing— who are being transferred to Jtfie Marton Mercury, recently taken over by the Herald Company, were the recipients of souvenirs at the hands of their fellow-employes. Thepresentation was made by Mr James Duigan, the editor of the Herald. The Lyttelton Times urges the Government to increase its strength in the Legislative Council before Parliament meets. Is this a feeler — a kind of shadow of coming events ? Rumour mentions that the names of Messrs "Jack" Kerr (of Nelson), W. C. Smith (of Waipawa), Arthur Warburton (of Wellington) and " Dick " Reeves (of Westport) as likely shortly to be called to the Council. We understand that arrangements are now being made by a local resident for the purpose of opening a skating rink in Feilding. A large number of the latest American roller skates have been secured and nothing will be left undone to make the venture a successful one. As there are many persons in this district whose tastes lie in the direction of roller skating, the opportunity shortly to be presented of indulging in their favorite pastime will no doubt be gladly availed of by our " roller enthusiasts." Three chess matches were played by the Marton Club last week, namely, against Woodville, Wellington Post Office Library Club, and the Clifton Club, the two former being played by telegraph. The first named was played by the first team and the two last by the second team. Although tbc exact result is not yet known, Woodville will certainly lose ; but in the other two the local teams are severely beaten. Tbe Wellington men will win by five games to two and two probable draws. The Clifton team have won by five games to two.
