A COALITION GOVERNMENT PROBABLE. STATUE TO CROMWELL TO BE ERECTED. (Per Press Association). London, June 15. The Duke of Devonshire and the Hon. Joseph Chamberlain, speaking as guests at the National Conservative Union banquet, indicated that they were willing to join a Coalition Government. June 16. The House of Commons, by a majority of fifteen, voted in favor of Cromwell's Statue being erected outside Westminster. The Unionists prevented the defeat of the Government. Half of the Parnellites and the Nationalists, together with the majority of the Conservatives, opposed the proposal. Mr William Redmond declared that the Irish regarded Cromwell s s a murderer and a hypocrite. Sir W. V. Harcourt, in reply, said that Cromwell was looked upon as one of the greatest characters and rulers in English history.
