"I Expect to Pass Through this World but Once."
The quotation is an old and oft repeated one but the origin is not generally known. It is taken from the epitaph on the tomb of Edward Courtenay, Earl of Devonshire. The idea has been expressed in a little poem by Joseph A. Torney : Through this troublesome world, alas! Once and only once I pass. If a kindness I may show ; If a good deed I may do To my suffering fellow man ; Let me do it while I can, Nor delay it, for 'tis plain I shall not pass this way again !
