Feilding Borough Council.
A special meeting or the .borough Council was held this morning to consider a proposal to improve the appearance of Manchester Square and discuss matters in connection with the municipal buildings. Present — The Mayor (Mr W. A. Sandilauds), Crs E. Goodbehere, H. Worsfold, W. A. L. Bailey, G. H. Saywcll, G. W. Fowles, and A. R. Allan. Apologies were received from Crs Gould and Chamberlain for non-attend-ance. The Mayor read letters from Mr Prior and Messrs Bell, Gully, and Izard with reference to the land to be transferred to the Borough by the Colonists' Land and Loan Corporation. The deed of trust was also read. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Fowles, That the Council approves of the transfer and declaration of trust for the municipal chambers site submitted to it for execution by the solicitors of the Colonists' Land and Loan Corporation, Ltd., and the Mayor and Cr Bailey be hereby authorised to execute the said deeds and affix the seal of the Council thereto. The Mayor in introducing the question of improving Manchester Square stated he had taken round a subscription list and received promises to the extent of i; 34 12s Od. The amount paid in general rates by those who had put their names down for subscriptions was i."259 ss, and the total amount of general rates collected in the Borough was £150, so that those subscribing paid one-third of the total general rate. He suggested that a £ for £ subsidy should be granted by the Council, and he believed if this was done there would be sufficient money to fence, plant and compete footpaths in the Square. He thought the Council would be justified in giving a subsidy and hoped the Council would see its way to contribute. He suggested that a fence with six or seven wires would be suitable in preference to a chain fence, which, according to an estimate made sometime ago, would cost £10. Mr Weightman, of Awahuri, had promised to give some shrubs if the Square was fenced and he had no doubt others would do the same. Cr Goodbehere did not think the Council would be justified in giving a subsidy until they had more definite plans before them with an estimate of the cost. He did not think a post and wire fence would look well and some other scheme should be suggested. Cr Bailey thought it was time something was done to the Square, and he thought if plans were put before them there would no difficulty in getting the Council to grant a subsidy. The thanks of the burgesses were due to the Mayor for going round with the subscription list. Proposed by Cr Saywcll, seconded by Cr Worsfold, That the discussion re improvements to Square stand over to next ordinary meeting of the Council. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Bailey, seconded by Cr Saj'well, That a committee consisting of Crs Goodbehere, Allan, the Mayor, and the mover, prepare plans for improving the Square, and bring the same up at the next usual meeting of the Council. — Carried. The Council then adjourned.
