Au harmonic Society is being started by vocalists in the Kiwitea and Birmingham districts. There will be Mass at St. Bridget's Church, Feilding, on Sunday, at 8 and 11 a.m., and Evening Service at 8 p.m: The telegraph manager at Charters Towers (Queensland) has been fined i.'sO for divulging the contents of a telegram. Messrs Gorton and Son will sell at their Feilding yards to morrow draughts, harness horses and hacks. Sale at one o,clock. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Manchester Lodge will be held in the Foresters' Hall at 7.80 p.m. this evening. A crop of 30 acres of swedes ou Olri« station, Hawke's Bay, is reported to have provided 2500 hoggets with feed for a month, and the ground was expected to carry 1500 ewes for three or four weeks to finish up the crop. We (Wairoa Guardian) hear that the Bank of New Zealand is foreclosing on a large estate in tne Poverty Bay district, the amount involved being something over i' 50,000. Several others are stated to be likely to follow. Caprain Jackson Barry will lecture in the Birmingham Hall this eveuingaud in Apiti Hall to-morrow eveniug. The Captain's lectures have been well spokeu of by the press on various parts of the coast and should be well worth listening to. We understand that as soon as the settlers (or the Kiwitea County Council) are prepared to guarantee the cost of constructing a telephone Hue to Pemberton and Rangiwahia and, also, a line from Cheltenham to Waituna, the Government will undertake the work. Now that the Wangauui Education Board has authorised the Inspector, Mr Bindon, to inspect Roman Catholic schools in his district, it is expected a school in connection with the Roman Catholic church in Feilding, will be opened at an early date. There is a strong controversy going on in the Wanganui papers among clergymen, and a few laymen, as to the actual meaning of the Hebrew word " yom." It goes without saying the divergence of opinion is something startling. Any Jewish schoolboy would solve the riddle in a moment— without losing his temper either. A concert is to be held in the public Hall at Colyton on Tuesday next in aid of the Church of England building fund. A varied and attractive programme is being provided comprising songs, recitations and quartettes. Amongst those who have promised to sing are Misses A. Fry and Diamond, Messrs Treseder, Matheson, Johnston and Revlnnes Jones besides local talent. A competent authority, after an inspection of the Thames goldfield, speaking of the possibilities of the Waihimine gives it as his opinion that next year it will turn out .£200.000 worth of bullion. Should another 100 head of stampers as projected be erected this will of course be more than doubled, and with improved appliances and developments in future working, 1897 or the 20th century will see a yearly output at this mine alone of half-a-million per annum, employing a busy hive of workmen in the process of production. — Exchange. The lease of the Birmingham Family and Commercial Hotel has now been completed and Mr Harrison has taken possession. We understand it is Mr T. Lowes intention to reside in the district for a feAV weeks until he has settled other business in connection with the Oroua sawmill, which he has an interest in, and his farm, and after this he will visit various parts of the colony, and next summer will take a trip Home. Mr Lowes' successor, Mr Harrison, is a gentlemeu who, we feel sure, will always conduct his premises in a way that will make travellers feel at home as Mr Lowes lias clone in the past. The premises have been leased for a term of seven years, and the stock and furniture was taken oyer at a valuation, Messrs Zohrab and Birch acting as valuators.

The Te Aro House (Wellington) management have decided to open a branch at Hunterville. Mrs J. H. Worsfold, of the Feilding Boarding House, advertises for a good general servant ; also a nurse girl. Entries for Messrs Abraham and Williams Palmerston sale on the 20th instant and additions to the Cotyton sale of the firm, are advertised to-day. In reference to a letter which appears to-day in our correspondence column over the signature of Mr E. W. Mullins, we may state that the report was copied by us from the Manawatu Standard and duly acknowledged. The manager of Lochivar station, Upper Mohaka (Hawke's Bay) reports that on employe named William Rowley is believed to have gone mad and lost himself in the bush on the run. Some of his clothes have been picked up. Tauranga, Bay of Plenty, is the only place in the colony able to boast of being able to keep the Chinaman gardener out. This fact is accounted for by the presence of a Caledonian who denes " John" in the matter of price and quantity of his vegetables. The man Michael Conway, who gave himself in charge to Constable Tuohy on Thursday, the 6th instant, while suffering from delirium (rent ens was brought up on remand this morning before Messrs H. L. Shcrwill & C. Bull, J.P.s, and was discharged on condition that he paid 80s cost of medical attention in Wauganui gaol and Feilding. An order-in-Council notiiies that telegrams redirected to a corrected address are liable to an additional charge of Cd, if delivery can be effected from the original receiving office, but if the corrected address requires the message to be retelegraphed from the receiving office, the charge will be made equal to the original amount paid. Last Wednesday evening a popular concert was held at Awahuri in aid of the funds of the public library, which was well attended. Mr Tarrant, who presided, stated that there were now 220 books in the library available for lending out. Among the singers at the concert were Mrs Tarrant, Misses Findlayson, Holmes, Bennett and Martin, Messrs Mends, Mann, Tarrant and Master Ishcrwood. Several encores were complied with. Misses Hamilton, Holmes and Bennett played the several accompauinicuts. After the concert an enjoyable dance was held. David Jeffcrey, a retired grocer, who formerly carried on business in North Melbourne, but has lately lived at a hotel in Melbourne, sat down to his midday meal one day last week when he was very ranch the worse lor liquor, and in a very bad humor. When he received a plate containing corned beef, for which lie had called, he was unable to cut the meat up. The attendants offered to cut up his dinner for him, but he rudely declined assistance, and, taking up a piece of meat from his plate about two inches square, he attempted to bolt it. The piece, however, was so large that he was unable to swallow it, and it became fastened in the top of his windpipe. As nobody present could relieve him he was conveyed to the hospital, but died from suffocation before medical aid arrived.
