London Wool Sales.
The London agent of the Colonial Bank reports uuder date of May 3rd, as follows : — The third series of Colonial wool sales for this year opened on the 30th ultimo with a net available quantity of 341,000 bales (including about 20,000 bales old stock held over from last series) ; of the total, New Zealand has about 64,500 bales, 63,000 of this being fresh arrivals. The attendance of buyers from all parts was large, but bidding for the most part lacked animation ; and no perceptible improvement in this respect has been shown since the opening night. As it is admitted on all sides that trade does show some improvement, this apathy on the part of buyers, and the actual decline in quotations are difficult to account for ; opinion attributes both largely to the French buyers who last sales made the market, while this series they thus far do the reverse. Prices as compared with closing rates of last series, show a decline of 5 per cent, with the exception of deep lustrous crossbreds, and the better merinos, both scoured and in grease, which rule about par. As at present arranged the series will close on the 31st ultimo.
