» FEILDING I. v. PALMERSTON I. The weather was fine on Saturday afternoon, when the above match was played on the Palmerston Showground, resulting in a victory for the visitors by 13 points to 3. In the first spell the Feilding men had the best of the pame, and were nearly scoring several times, but the excellent defensive play on the part of Tripe, Weight, Podevin, and Pike saved their side repeatedly from the attacks made by Shannon and Richards. In the second spell it was thought that Palmerston, with the wind in their favor, would trouble the visitors, and the hopes of their supporters were raised accordingly, but Feilding played with even more dash than in the previous spell and quite surprised the spectators with their highly-creditable passing. Giesen, from the line-out at the half-way flag, broke away and raced for the line, and on being surrounded by the Palmerston backs he quickly passed to Le Cren, who registered a try near the posts. Collins took the kick and placed a goal, amidst considerable applause. The play was of a give and take nature until Matravers got well away, and passing to Richards the latter had no difficulty in outpacing those in pursuit, and placed a second try to the credit of his side, which Le Cren converted into a goal. Soon after the kick off Weight got away with the ball and passed to Tripe, who was splendidly collared near the line by Parr. The ball was transferred to Weight, who crossed the line, but the Referee called the ball back for a throw forward. The Feilding men redoubled their efforts and some fine forward rushes on their part immensely pleased the onlookers. Eventually Richards secured possession of the ball and scored the third try. The kick for goal by Le Cren did not increase the score. Just before the call of time the ball was kicked over the Feilding backs' heads, and Tripe following up smartly scored the first try under the posts for Palmerston. Koeling took the kick but failed in the attempt. The winners undoubtedly hai by far the best of the game and deserved the victory. The passing of the backs w;is ou the whole a vast improvement on the exhibitions which spectators have been accustomed to witness from the same team. Of the backs Shannon, Giesen and Richards played with great dash, the latter putting in some clever dodgy runs, while the former proved a tower of strength to his side behind the scrum. Parr (fullback) proved himself a sure tackier and saved a score more than once. Jack, Matravers, Johnston and Giesen wore the most prominent among the forwards. For Palmerston the backs, as a whole, exhibited lack of combination, and repeatedly failed to support each other. Individually, Tripe was undoubtedly the pick — in fact, he showed the best form of the threequartors on the ground ; in collaring and running ho appeared to great advantage, and on several occasions this was suitably recognised by great applause. UnfortuDateJy he was not fed sufficiently. Weight is also deserving of a word of praise for his display. Eliott, Prendergast, and Ottersen were in the front division of the forwards, while Pike on the wing played a hard game, tackling in tiptop style. Mr A. J. Weekes proved himself an impartial referee. Messrs Strachan. (Feilding) and I. Fake (Palmerston) were the line umpires. — Standard.
