«- Mr F. Pirani, M.H.R., will address tbo electors in the Public Hall, Bunny thorpe, ou Tuesday evening next at 1,30 p.m. The citizens of Wellington intend to present an illuminated address to the Hon R. J. Seddon on his birthday, June 22nd prox. The usual fortnightly meeting of the local Lodge of Oddfellows will be held this evening in the Foresters' Hall at 7.30 p.m. A single man named Thomas Scott, a carpenter, was seized with a fit at Pahiatua yesterday, and died an hour afterwards. F. E. Chamberlain has sold his colt bred by Mr S. Baker (by Somnus out of Souvenir), to Mr P. "Woulfc, for sixty guineas. Messrs Gorton and Son held their monthly stock sale at Feilding to-day, the entries of sheep being very large and cattle moderate. Mr Cummins will hold a sale bj' auction to-morrow (Saturday) in the shop, Fergusson street, of general drapery, clothing, etc. The cricketers of Colytou will hold a plain and fancy dress ball in the Maugaone Hall this evening. The gather- j ing promises to be a great success. Policeman to Wheelman (who is riding on the side path) : ' See here, young man, you can't ride there.' ' Can't eh ? Well, you just watch rue." And he shot out of sight. A copy of the Governor's warrant authorising the Manchester Road Board to construct a bridge over the Mangaone creek on the Feilding-Ashurst road, is published in our advertising columns. The Standard says : — The Longburn Freezing Works were 3"esterday taken possession of by the mortgagees, the National Mortgage and Agency Company. The amount of the mortgage is about .£10,500. Mr Thomas Evans, of Queen street, advertises that now prepared to do carting in town or country. As Mr Evans is well known and is thoroughly acquainted with every part of the district he deserves a fair share of public support. On Wednesday evening next a concert will be held in Compbelltown in aid of the funds of the Anglican church. In addition to the best local singers, several vocalists from Palmerston and Feilding have promised to assist, and there is every prospect of a musical treat being provided. The editor of a LeadviJle paper meant to be complimentary, when he spoke of an actress as " this side of 25," but as he was over 40, she didn't take the statement as he intended she should, and waltzed in on him with a meat-axe, and made him publish a statement that she was only 17. A concert and dance will be held in Birmingham Town Hall on Friday evening next under the auspices of the Druids Lodge. Some of the best singers in the Kiwitea district have proruished to assist, while several of the most popular yoealists in Feilding are expected to be present. We understand it is the intention of the department to make Sanson a telephone office, running an extra wire to Bulls for the purpose. If a lady telephonist is placed in charge, as w r e believe is intended, it will be a new departure in the Registrar-General's department — probably the first lady registrar in the colony. A Chicago doctor claims to have discovered what he terms the " microbe of death." If it can be destroyed, nothing short of actural violence, he says can put an end to any one's life. The discovery a new therapeutic serum, for the treatment of various diseases, including erysipelas, diphtheritic angua, bronchial diseases, meningitis, phlegmon, puerperal fever, &c, is announced from Paris. What might have resulted in a serious trap accident happened at Bunnythorpe yesterday. A lady and gentleman with a little girl were driving towards Palmerston in a gig when, having crossed the railway lino, without the slightest warning one of the wheels collapsed, with the result that the whole of the occupants were precipitated into the mud, luckily escaping with nothing more than a shaking. _____ m _ m _ m ___ a= _
