'Per Press Association) Auckland, May 21 A number of carpenters, bricklayers and plasterers (100), through the Hon. YV. Jennings, asked the Premier to adopt the cooperative principle in the re-erec-tion ofthe Auxiliary Asylum. The Premier states the proposal will receive favorable consideration and instructions will be given to have plans and specifications prepared forthwith. James Whitelaw, a bankrupt on the charge ot not keeping proper books was committed for trial, bail being allowed. Wellington, May 21. The following have been appointed members of the middle District University College in addition to the four already elected, and the Chairman of the Board of Education, who acts ex officio : — Bishop Wallis, Mr Kelly M.L.C , Messrs Graham, Buick, Hogg and Pirani, Ms.H.R., F. Arkwright, and A. Warburton. Invercargill, May 21. The Invercargill South School Committee has resolved to ask the Minister of Education to introduce an amendment to the Education Act, giviug committees voting powers in the election of members of the Education Boards in proportion to th* average attendance at tbeir schools, and suggesting as a fair basis one vote for each school up to 100 of average attendance, and an additional vote for every 100 exceeding that number. Waisiate, May 21. At a meeting of the Executive of the New Zealand Workers' Union a resolution was passed asking the Government to legislate in the direction of preventing station holders from calling their shearers' rolls at publichouses during the shearing time. This custom is prevalent in the McKenzie country and other places througnout New Zealand.
