The Unemployed.
(Per Press Association). Natiei:, May 21. There i' a peculiar state of tilings in ci nucctio i with tho unemployed hero. Complaints have, from time to time, been made that the reports of the Laboar Bureau as to the state of the labour market here arc not accurate. This appears to be due to the marked disinclination to register with the Bureau. The other day a meeting of the unemployed was held, whon tho Mayor was informed by tlio Police that only one man had registered. He advised them to register in view of several Government building contracts being put in haud. Since then eighty more names have been handed to the Mayor, many of them carpenters, but none have been registered at the Bureau. The only reason given was that the men feared that if they registered at the Bureau they would be prosecuted for having no visible means of support. The Mayor endeavoured to re-assure them on that point but apparautly unsuccessfully. A considerable number of carpenters will soon be required, aud the police arc to select from the register list, but there arc uot enough on it. The bulk of the men are undoubtedly capable and anxious to work, but for some unaccountable reason will not go tlie right way to get it.
