The Half-Holiday Question.

AN IMPORTANT POINT. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, May 17. At the prosecution at Gisboriae under the Shop Hours Act, Messrs Recs and Finn, on behalf of the storekeepers, raised the point that as the Act did not come into operation till the Ist January, 1895, the words in clause 9 stating that the day on which shops shall be appointed by local authority "in the month of January next," referred to January, 1896. They quoted a strong case— Richardson v. Mcßride, Law Reports, 8 Queen's Bench, page 119 — in support of this. The Magistrate said this point would effect the whole colony, and was one which should rest with the Supreme Court to decide. Mr Rees said a case for appeal would be specdilv drawn up.
