-♦ (Ter Press Association") Dunedin, May 16. At the Police Court, John Fleming, produce merchant was fined 5s and costs each on three charges of breaches of the Shops and Shop Assistants Act. Fleming had kept his place of business open for from hai f-an- hour to an hour after 1 o'clock, ancl two of the employees were kept at work. Mr Carew, S.M. reserved his decision in the case against O. Armstrong, dentist, for failing to register his Dlace of business as a factory. Auckland, May 16. Henry Christopher Smith was brought up to day on a charge of assaulting Lizzie Carney. Sergeant Gamble said the woman was in a serious condition in the hospital. When admitted to the hospital she could not see and was unable to speak. Her body was black and blue from kicking. There was a possibility of her not recoyering. The Bench decided to refuse bail. Smith was remanded. Wellington, This Day. The Passenger Returns for the last month show — arrivals, 1802 ; departures 2522 since 1891. The regulations with reference to life saving appliances for ships are gazetted.
