MR REID IN REPLY TO " RATEPAYER."

TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir, — I did not intend to trouble you again, but when I read the flourishing letter of " Ratepayer " I decided to give him a rap over the knuckles so that he will not be so fast in rushing into print, or of drawing plans either. I think he had no business to refer to the late " bun scramble" and its meanness, because that has nothing to do with either me or the Borough. When " Ratepayer " referred to my action as another " sample" of meanness he was wrong, i because I hold myself to be just as liberal as " Ratepayer " or any other burgess, because I sign my name openly. As to my using the services of the Brigade— if I lived near Manchester Square — that is a foolish question for anyone to ask, for I certainly would do so in case of need ; but as 1 do not live near the Square, but two miles away from it, the Brigade is never likely to be of any use to me or my neighbors. At the same time I give all honor to the members of the Brigade. On the architect question, I have evidently touched " Ratepayer " on a soft place, otherwise he would not have taken so much trouble in giving full details in reply to a question already answered by the Mayor. Now, sir, I consider " Architect " must at one time have slept in the same room with " Ratepayer," or he would not have known so much about the subject. Other points of " Ratepayer's " letter which display lamentable want of good taste and courtesy I leave untouched. I am, ite, W. Reid, Makino.
