♦ TWENTY TWO DAYS IN A FISHING BOAT. THE COLLINGWOOD TRAGEDY. THE COAL TRADE. (Per Press Association). Sydney, May 4. The Assembly negatived motions in favor of universal suffrage and non admittance of anyone to the civil service excepting holders of electoral rights in the Colony. The steamer Kelles, from Solomon Islands, picked up three Frenchmen at Marua Sound. They stated they had been driven from Vila Harbour during a gale while fishing. They were for 22 days in a small boat, and endured terrible suff eringsbef ore they reached Marua They refused a passage to Sydney, preferring to remain at the Solomons. Melbourne, May 3. The Cabinet has forwarded a letter to Judge Moleswortb, expressing surprise at the language used by him in Sir J, B. Da vies' case, and asking for a written explanation. The Postal Department saves L3OOO per annum by reducing the commission on the sale of stamps from 6d to 4d in the £. No trace has yet been found of Dooley, who murdered his wife and mother-in-law, through a report, which has not been confirmed, says that he committed suicide by jumping over-board from a harbour steamer. Brisbane, May 3. A South Australian Commission is now engaged enquiring into the coloured labor question, with the view of introducing ooloured labor into the northern territory. Newcastle, May 5. A letter has been received from the leading San Francisco coal importers stating tha,t the English anthracite coal is entering in very strong competition with the Australian article, and is already cutting down prices. The letter adds if the importation continues Australian coal will soon be knocked clean out of the market.
