The English Budget.
(PEB PEE3O ASSOCIATION.) .London, May 2. In his Budget speech, Sir. V. Harcburi said the revenue last year amounted tc £94,684,000 leaving a surplus of .£776,000 which would be applied to the reductton of the National debt. The estimated revenue for the next year was £95,662,Q0C and the expenditure £95,981,000. The anticipated deficit would be met by the re. imposition of - the expiring beer duty thus leaving a surplus of £181,000. The expiring spirit duty would not be re-im-posed. The death duties had produced £'973,000 or £32 below the estimate. The closeness of this estimate was looked upon as a marvellous achievement, and the an. nouncetnent ofthe figures was ; received with cheers. The Income Tax yielded £-15,600,000. The Home and Foreign dairy produce, fruit and meat markets had increased, meat showing an increase of ten per cent, during the past three years. The wine revenue showed a decrease last year of £66,000 and spirits a decrease of L 63,000. May 3. In conclusion Sir W. V. Harcourt said that it was perhaps the last occasion ,he would be in the position to utter the warning to the House. The concluding portion of his speech has given me to much comment and the meaning of his last statement is keeniy discussed.
