The Gorge Bridge.

Wellington, April 24. Mr P. Pirani, M.H.E., introduced a deputatiou to the Minister of .Lands 1 to-day, consisting of Mr Lethbridge (Chairman of the Manchester Road Board) and Mr Cotter (Aahurßt), in reference to the Gorge bridge. Mr Lethbridge explained the difficulty of the Boards interested in providing funds for such a work, which was really part of the main road and of little use' to the district in particular. Messrs Pirani and Cotter emphasised the claims of the district to Government assistance, and pointed out the great advantage of the road when railway communication was inter* rupted. The Minister said he recognised that the local bodies could not find all the funds to construct the bridge. He asked Mr Lethbridge to get the local bodies interested to formulate a scheme to rebuild the bridge, and he would lay the matter before the Cabinet and see what as. siatance could be rendered, though of course he could not give a definite pledge on the matter on his own account until then.— Standard.
