» I A special meeting of the above body was held yesterday to consider the Engimer's (Mr C. Bray's) report on the damage done by the recent floods within their district. Present j —Messrs P. Y. Lethbridge (chair- { man), J. Purkiss, A. Conway, W. G. ] Pearce, G. Wheeler. I '1 he Engineer's report was read as follows ; — " I have to report thac the late j flood has done considerable damage , to the roads and bridges in the dis- ' trict. " i here are five spans and three ( piers of the lower Gorffe bridge washed away, the Gorge road is blocked t with slips. '• A log culvert is washed out on the Feilding-Ashurst road near the junction ot Harrison's road, and a j portion of a culvert in the same creek , crossing the old Napier road — (Instructed to repair.) " There is a small sill bridge undermined on the Feilding-Ashuvst roa'^ about two miles this side of Ashurst £ — ( To lengthen the span). j " A large log culvert on the Feild- , ing Ashurst road about 20 chains { beyond the Mangaone bridge— (To be i left until former is done.) " The approach to the Mangaone ; bridge is damaged on the Taonui road , —(Work completed ) < " The approach to Mong-aonebridge ' on the Valley road is washed away To be repaired sit once with white pine stringers.) "'lhere are also several small bridges and culverts damaged on this road. " The approaches to the Mangaone , bridge on .Reid's line are washed , away. — (To stand over.) ki 'lhere is a large gap washed out on the Makino road on the Tokorangi hill.— (To he filled up )\ The estimated damage to roads and bridges, omitting the Gorge road and bridge is about iMJO. The damage to the Gorge road and bridge was discussed at length, 'ihe estimated cost of making the former passable being £-00, it was decided not to cloar the slips away at, present. With reference to ihe Gorge bridge, the chairman was instructed to in'erview the Premier in ellington to ask for a Government grant towards reconstructing it. It was also decided to ask the chairman of th • Pahiatiirt and Firzherberc County Councils to be present at the inter--1 view in support of the application. .Resolved, '1 hat the Chairman and ' Messrs Purkiss and Pearce beauthorisee to sign and seal the transfer of ■ that portion of road cut off bj Mci Crea's road.
