The Japanese Legation here has been informed that the understanding concluded at Shimonoseki, promising an early peace, and that the Japanese had diminished tlieir original demands, has been confirmed. Calcutta, April 15. The British Government intend to place a garrison in Kingtung as a measure of precaution. London, April 16. News has been received that the terms of peace between China and Japan have been arranged. The Times special reporter in Shanghai telegraphs that the terms of peace between Japan and China include the independence of Corea, the retention by Japan of conquered places, also the territory east of the Hiao river, the concession of Formosa, an indemnity of one hundred million dollars, and an offensive and defensive alliance.
