The Speakership of the House of Commons.
« (PKB PBEBS ASSOCIATION). London. April 10. In the House of Commons, referring to the appointment of Mr Gully as Speaker, the Hon. A. J. Balfour complained that Government had violated traditions for selecting a man almost wholly unknown. Sir W. V. Harcourt, in a speech of some warmth, accused Mr Balfour of intriguing to defeat Mr Courtney, who was the best man for the position. In tbe debate much party feeling was displayed, and at times it amounted almost to disorder. Mr Balfour assured Mr Gully that the Opposition would loyally abide by his decisions.
