Retrenchment in Victoria.
(Per Press Association., Melbourne, This Day. The Premier in replying to a deputation from the University, said the grant in aid would have to be reduced by £1500. It was determined when he presented the next budget to show the Colony was able to pay its way. There were only two means by which this could be done — further taxation or retrenchment. If possible he would avoid the former for as far as be could gauge public |opinion there was a demand for j further retrenchment. If the finances could be squared it would prove a permanent factor in restoring prosperity. The Government has decided to continue the bonus on flax, honey, oil, and seeds for another year.
