Fire at Wanganui.

Per Press Association.) Wanganui, April 5. About 5.20 this evening Woolley'a Commercial Hotel was discovered to be on fire in the upper part. The Brigade quickly had it under control, but not before some of the upper rooms were destroyed and the lower portions considerably damaged by water. Fireman Townsend had a narrow escape from a fatal accident, the ladder breaking, precipitating him to the ground. The fall, however, was broken by Fireman McGregor, who pluckily attempted to catch him. The following are the insurances : — Furniture : £50 in the South British, £200 in the New Zealand, £150 in the London, Lancashire and Globe. Building : £350 in the South British, £150 in the Phoenix, and £100 in the New Zealand. The piano was separately insured. The stock was insured for £200 in the New Zealand and £50 in the South British.
