The Fielding Star, OROUA & KIWITEA COUNTIES GAZETTE. Published Daily. TUESDAY, APRIL 2, 1895. Local and General News.

The Feilding Masonic Lodge will meet on Monday next. j Mr F. Pope has Bent us a very fine peach which weighs ten ounces, grown by Mr Doughty, of Bulls. Mr D. Simpson will hold the first practice of his singing class in the Temperance Hall this evening. We understand that the social to b% given to the Bishop of Wellington in the Assembly Rooms on Thursday next will be a great success. Mr Dillon, carpenter, of Palmerston North, was the successful tenderer for the Manawatu County Council offices at Sandon. A concert in aid of the Church of England organ fund will be held in the Public Hall, Colyton, on Wednesday the 10th inst. Further particulars in advertisement and handbills. The death is announced of Mr Henry Hare, landlord of the Wellington Hotel, Molesworth Street, Wellington, who died about 2 o'clock this morning of typhoid fever. It is a sensible fashion that now followed in England of wearing all wool underclothing, and besides lias had an appreciable effect in raising the price of the raw material, The Rev. J. Cocker will give a lecture in the Primitive Methodist Church tomorrow night on "Life in an English village," when a large attendance is expected, as admission is onlj sixpence and refreshments will be provided. j The opening of the Pohangina Hall J will take place early in May. Messrs J. G. Browne, G. Adsctt and G. Bayliss arc the Concert Committee. Subscriptions towards the building fund of the hall will be thankfully rcccined by the treasurer. The annual tea meeting in connection with the Feilding Presbyterian Church is announced, to be held on Monday next. These gatherings have an unbroken record of .success, and given fine weather, there is no doubt but that the present one will reach the same high standard of excellence. Tenders are invited by the clerk to the Pohangina Count}' Council, to close at Pohangina at 11 a.m. on the 13th inst for work on Pohangiua Valley and Apiti roads. Specifications may be seen at Mr Palmer's store (Pohangiua) or Engineer's office (Palmerston N.) In order to get oyer the apparent difficulty anent the choice of a new name for Palmerston North a Feilding man has suggested that of Auchtermuchty a title which is at the same time dignified, simple, euphonious, and b3 r no means hackneyed. There arc one or two residents in Palmerston who could teach the others its correct pronounciation. The opening of the new church at Raugiwahia will take place on the 14 th of this month. Services will be held at half-past two in the afternoon, and 7 in the evening. In consequence of counter attractions, the tea meeting is postponed for one month. The Rev. T. R. Richards will preach at both of the above meetings. On Wednesday night the Rev J. Cocker will lecture in the Primitive Methodist Church on " Life in an English village and some characters I have met there." Refreshments will be handed round and as the charge for admission is only sixpence the church ought to be crowded. We understand the lecture w r ill be humorous and instructive. In connection with the Easter Encampment it has been ascertained that Warnock and Adkin will be able to supply volunteers with camp rugs and waterproofing at very reasonable rates. The firm are this week opening up a further shipment of winter drapery and clothiug and a selected stock will reach Feilding on or about Wednesday next, when fresh novelties will be available. For other particulars see advertisement. A sympathiser with the objects of the Salvation Army writes ; — " Our excellent Feilding band does not often honour us with its music, but when they do we expect common courtesy extended to them. This, lam sorry to say the army forgot on Saturday, when they persistently allowed their band to play discords, while the Feilding band were endeavouring to give us their much appreciated music. Had their cars been as sensitive as their consciences ought to be this reminder would have been unnecessary." A severe accident happened to Mr C. Roskruge at_the Mercury office yesterday morning while supervising some alterations to the printing machine. In looking under the machine which was in motiou his liaud. came in contact with a , part of the machinery which caused tse- j ve:e injuries to the wrist of the left arm. i The sufferer was at once sent to the Wangauui Hospital when it was found necessary to amputate his hand just above the wrist. Great S5 7 mpathy is felt for Mr Roskmgo and family at the unfortunate accident. Admiral Lord Alcestcr or Sir Beauchamp Seymour, whose death was mentioned in our columns yesterday, was a distinguished naval officer. He commanded at the bombardment of the forts at Alexandria. At one period of his career, 1860 01, as Commodore in command of the Australian station, he took part in the operations of the Naval Brigade in New Zoahmd, and received the New Zealand medal. lie commanded the detached squadron, ihe Channel squadron, and the Meet in the Mediterranean, and in 1880 the allied nec-i of the European Powers in ilieir narai demonstration against the Turks off the Albanian coast. The Palmerston /Times feelingly remarks : — " The attention of subscribers is especially directed to a notice in another column relating to accounts due to tho proprietor of this journal. The (otal sum now on our books is a very large one, and .vhile numbers pay promptly there are many who seem to think that no expeuce is incurred in producing a daily newspaper. Those who nogU.ct payment because the sum owed appears comparatively small should reflect that in the aggregate such sums represent a large amouutoutstanding. The total due bo hs ou subscription account amounts to a very large sum, and when to this arc added sums owing for advertising, it will be seen that wo are justified in asking our subscribers and others to pay promptly the accounts which are being rendered to them." Wo feel just the same.

I Last season 890,000 trout were hatched j out in the Wellington Acclimatisation Society's fish ponds at Masterton. ! There will be mass in Halcombe on Sunday next at 8 o'clock and in Feilding at 11 o'clock in the forenoon and 3 in ; the afternoon. j An American paper says: — "What is j editorial courtesy ? Why it is when ' an editor is caught stealing chickens at midnight, and his brother editors kindly I allude to the matter as " Strange freak of a somnambulist." At the Bulls Magistrates Court three boys, found guilty oi" damaging property on the railway line at Halcombe, were each fined 20s and costs. The evidence showed that amongst other pranks they put timber across the rails, and could thus have wrecked a train. The Examiner .says: — Some largo trout have receutly been hooked in the Manawatu river, and have proved beyond the angler's power of capture. In the Gorge on Thursday, Major Campbell booked an enormous fish which carried off his line and tackle. The topsy-turvoydom which has reigned for some time at the Departmental Buildings has caused the archives of the various offices to be turned out wholesome into the corridors, and many curious discoveries have been made. One of these was the finding of one of Te Kooii's flag?, taken by Lieat.- Colonel M'Donnell at Te Oro. The flag was Lieut Colonel M'Donnell's personal property, and at his request the Premier has authorised its return to him. — Post.
