ENGLISHMEN v. SOUTH AUSTRALIA.
(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION!. Adelaide, March 30. The weather was fine for the match, and the attendance large. When the stumps were drawn for the day only four wickets were down with the fine score of 451, and of these three had reached tbe century or over. Ward and Brown, the not-outs of the previous evening, began slowly at the first, but were not long before" they opened, and not only were the field kept busy, but the scorer, too, was bard at work. The Yorksbireman fell a victim to a trimmer from Geo. Giffen, just after putting tbe century opposite his name. Tbe partnership was responsibe for 174,' and raised the total to 236. McLaren came next, and he, too, began to make things lively, knocking up eighteen runs in as many minutes. Joy reigned supreme when he sent one back to Giffen, which was accepted. The trouble, bowever, was not yet over, as Ford, who joined Ward, got to work and hitting both bard and lucky gave tbe field no rest. In attempting a short run he was missed, Reedman, who fielded the ball, making a smart return. Englishmen, Ist innings.
There is much disappointment in cricket circles because it has been found imposssible for Stoddart's team to meet tbe best of England.
