Re-naming Palmerston North.

THE GOVERNMENT DECLINE TO ACCEPT "MANAWATU." On Friday evening a notification was received from the Minister of Lands dedining to accept " Manawatu "as a name for the town of Palmerston North. -The • ground of refusal is stated to be that there is a large district around the town which is, and was before the town was named, known as the Mann watu district ; and the adoption of the suggested name would in tbe opinion of the Minister of Lands, * lead to endless confusion. The Mayor ib* tends to bring the matter before a special meeting of the Council, which is to- be held on Tuesday evening. We are in. formed on good authority that tbe Minis- ? ter of Lands approves of tbe name, > of Manawatu being given to- Paimerstoh North, and the objection to the. name comes solely from the Postal department, —Standard. — __ ■ • ' *
