The report of the labour bureau for the year states the depression was se- . verely felt but there was a good demand Jjpr farm labour and in the building trade -*was acute depression. The number of unemployed registered 13,500, an increase of 1400 on preceding 12 months. The bulk of these were sent fossicking for gold, and the increase in the yield of gold was largely attributed to by this means. -
